Cornwall is now a unitary authority. Previously there were six local authorities within the county: Caradon in South East Cornwall covered 256 square miles between the Rivers Fowey and Tamar on the south coast and north to Bodmin Moor. Carrick was in the middle of the county from Perranporth on the north coast via the city of Truro to the port of Falmouth on the south coast. Kerrier was to the west of Carrick. It stretched from Godrevy Head on the north coast to Lizard Point on the south coast. North Cornwall was, as it's name suggests, in the north of the county. It stretched from the Devon border near Bude nearly down to Newquay on the north coast and covered the northern part of Bodmin Moor. Penwith was at the western end of Cornwall and included St Ives, Penzance, Lands End and St Michael's Mount. Restormel lay across the centre of the county from Newquay to Fowey and St Austell. The name was taken from the Norman castle at Restormel on the edge of Lostwithiel. From 1st April 2009 the single Unitary Authority for Cornwall took over the responsibilities of the County Council and the six Local Authorities. In addition, the Isles of Scilly , which is not part of the county of Cornwall, has it's own local authority. This group of over 100 islands is situated 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall to the west of Lands End.
