Cornwall has been a prime location for filming since 1899. Cornwall's rugged rural characteristics, with minimal modernisation, have been ideal for historical films. Some of the Cornish harbours, such as Mevagissey and Charlestown, have required very little adaptation to return them to an 18th century appearance.

1899 Wreck of the 'S.S. Paris' Short silent black and white documentary film. A panoramic view, showing wrecking tugs trying to haul the steamship 'Paris' off the Manacle Rocks on which she had been wrecked the day before. Filmed at the Manacle Rocks near the Lizard. 1904 Scenes in the Cornish Riviera Black & white, silent film. Sponsored by the Great Western Railway as a promotional film for holidays in Cornwall. Locations include the Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash, Looe, Polperro, Newquay, Truro, Falmouth, Penzance, St Michael's Mount, Lands End and St Ives. 1919 The Toilers Silent black and white romantic drama based on the novel The Toilers of the Sea by Victor Hugo. Directed by Tom Watts. Starring Ronald Colman, Manora Thew, Eric Barker, George Dewhurst and Gwynne Herbert. Filmed somewhere around the coast of Cornwall. The film was released in March 1919 but is now presumed to be lost. 1920 Coves and Caves Black & white, silent film. The fourth in a series of travelogue films entitled The Beauty of Britain . Locations inclide Porth beach, Allan Valley, Trevose Head, Prideaux Place, Padstow, Wadebridge, St Teath and Boscastle. 1924 The Open Road An early colour film by Claude Friese-Greene. It was conceived as a series of short films, 26 episodes in all, to be shown weekly at the cinema. As a travelogue, it covered the journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back to London. 1925 On with the Furry Dance! Short black & white, silent film. Featuring the Helston Floral (or Furry) Dance 1929 Street of Abandoned Children Silent film. Also known as The Woman He Scorned and The Way of Lost Souls . A lighthouse keeper's wife shelters her fugitive lover. Director: Paul Czinner. Starring Pola Negri, Warwick Ward, Hans Rehman, Margaret Rawlings and Cameron Carr. A Western Morning News report featured an item about filming being disrupted in Mevagissey by church-goers on a Sunday. Made in St Ives and Mevagissey The Manxman A fisherman and a rising young lawyer, who grew up as brothers, fall in love with the same girl. A British International film. Director: Alfred Hitchcock. Starring: Carl Brisson, Malcolm Keen, Randle Ayrton and Anny Ondra. Although a film about the Isle of Man, all but two scenes were filmed in Cornwall at Polperro and in parts of North Cornwall 'The Manxman' on DVD 1935 The Mystery of the Marie Celeste During a horrific storm at sea, the crew realizes that there is a murderer among them who is killing them off one by one. Made by Hammer Films. Director: Denison Clift. Starring Bela Lugosi, Shirley Grey and Arthur Margetson. Also known as Phantom Ship Filmed at Falmouth. 1936 Windbag the Sailor Will Hay plays a bragging sea captain whose maritime experience actually extends to navigating a coal barge down inland waterways. His tall tales catch him out when he is co-erced into commanding an unseaworthy ship by an unscrupulous shipping agent who means to have it wrecked. A Gainsborough Pictures film. A Dufay Chromex Short (9 min) colour film about the Mary Barrow , the last of the topsail schooners transporting China clay from Cornwall to London. Filmed at Charlestown. 1938 Yellow Sands An Associated British Picture Corporation film. Director: Herbert Brenon. Starring: Marie Tempest, Belle Chrystall and Wilfrid Lawson Filmed at Sennen Cove. 1939 The Thief of Baghdad After being tricked and cast out of Bagdad by the evil Jaffar, King Ahmad joins forces with a thief named Abu to reclaim his throne, the city, and the Princess he loves. Filmed at Mevagissey Buy this film 'Johnny Frenchman' on DVD 1946 The Rakes Progress (Also under the title of Notorious Gentleman in USA) Vivian Kenway, a young Englishman from an aristocratic background, flunks out of Oxford, and decides to use his considerable charm to achieve his goal of, apparently, making dissipation his career.
